Clashes erupted Saturday, December 20 in Libreville during a banned demonstration of the Gabonese opposition who demanded the resignation of President Ali Bongo Ondimba, before being dispersed by police.

One student was killed during the events, said prosecutors. According to the coroner who examined the body, the young man died of a throat injury probably caused by "a sharp object." Neither the prosecutor nor the coroner specified the circumstances in which he was killed.

An important security detail was deployed, while a helicopter was constantly flying over the event venue. The security forces fired tear gas to prevent protesters to gather at the crossroads of Rio, in a neighborhood of the capital, where processions of hundreds of protesters poured in from each side of the square
BARRICADE BURNED AND TYRES
In the first line, caught in the firing tear gas were several tenors of the opposition - including the former secretary general of the African Union (AU), Jean Ping, and the last prime minister of the late President Omar Bongo Ondimba, Jean Eyéghé Ndong.
Around 3pm, heavy rain, combined with the action of the security forces dispersed the bulk of the crowd. Clashes then broke out into adjacent neighborhoods, where groups set up barricades, burning tires and at least one car. Large columns of black smoke were still visible in the sky in the late afternoon. At least twenty people were arrested.
Friday, the Gabonese Ministry of Interior announced that the demonstration was prohibited to avoid any "disturbance of public order", in a statement read on national television. President Ali Bongo Ondimba took the reins of the country to the death in 2009 of his father Omar, in power since 1967.
