The Prime Minister and the Defense Minister issued two press releases in today’s L’UNION condemning events surrounding the funeral of ex opposition leader, Andre Mba Obame. Precisely, the “excess of zeal”, “abuses towards the forces of order”, and the fact that Mr Mba Obame was buried with the national flag.

The Prime Minister Daniel Ona Ondo, in his PR put in contrast the state funeral given to ex interim president Rose Francine Rogombe, organized in a “calm and serene atmosphere” with the one given to ex UN leader Mba Obame.

The Defense Minister, Ernest Mpouoh Epigat in turn condemned the fact that Mr Mba Obame was buried with the national flag. He went on to remind that “No Gabonese, no matter his status had the right to be buried with the national flag. Late Presidents Léon Mba and Omar Bongo Ondimba, even though they died in their functions were not buried with the national flag.”

While the PM ends by reassuring Gabonese and foreigners living in Gabon regarding their security, the Defense Minister strongly condemns those who took upon themselves to disrespect the national flag, first symbol of the country.
