The Nigerian Oil Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke was elected last Thursday in Viennes, Austria, the new President of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). She became therefore the first woman to lead this organization, usually headed by men.

Diezani Alison-Madueke was born in 1960, the year of the creation of the OPEC. She is currently the only woman among the heads of delegations to the 12 country members.

The other key position of the Organization, the Secretary-General, is held by the Libyan Abdallah El-Badri, appointed in 2007, and reelected until the end of 2015.
